The orbital period of SMC X-3 from optical photometry.

COWLEY A.P. and SCHMIDTKE P.C.

Abstract (from CDS):

We have investigated the long-term optical light curve of SMC X-3 using the MACHO database. The optical counterpart is an O9e star that shows low-amplitude variability with a period of 44.86 days in both visible and red light. This compares favorably with the X-ray outburst recurrence period of 45.1 days recently found by Corbet et al. It is likely that this ∼45 day cycle is the orbital period of the hot star and its 7.8 s pulsar companion.
