Abstract (from CDS):

F. Ciabattari and E. Mazzoni, Borgo a Mozzano, Italy, report the discovery of a possible supernova (mag 15.8) on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 18.5) obtained on Sept. 21.04 and 21.85 UT with a 0.5-m Newtonian telescope in the course of the Italian Supernovae Search Project. The new object is located at R.A. = 2:08:21.41, Decl. = +41:29:12.3 (equinox 2000.0; astrometry with respect to UCAC-2 stars), which is 2" west and 26" north of the center of the galaxy UGC 1626. Nothing is visible at this position on digitized plates of the Palomar Sky Survey from 1987 Oct. 19 (F plate; limiting magnitude 20.3) and 1989 Sept. 8 (J plate; limiting magnitude 20.3). This object received the designation PSN J02082141+4129123 when it was posted at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2011fu based on the spectroscopy reported below. Additional unfiltered CCD magnitudes for 2011fu: Aug. 10, [18.8 (Ciabattari and Mazzoni); Sept. 20.708, 16.1 (Z. Jin and X. Gao, Mt. Nanshan, China, 0.35-m f/6.9 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope; position end figures 21s.25, 09".7; pre-discovery); 21.862, 16.2 (Nick James, Chelmsford, Essex, England; position end figures 21s.26, 09".8); 22.235, 15.9 (Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia; position end figures 21s.22, 10".0; image posted at URL http://www.flickr.com/photos/43846774@N02/6171405979/).
