Testing Verlinde's gravity using gravitational lensing of clusters.

Abstract (from CDS):

Verlinde proposed an elastic response force caused by the entropy displacement of dark energy, and considered it as an alternative to dark matter. In this paper, we test Verlinde's theory using gravitational lensing in a sample by clusters observed by the CLASH survey. We reconstruct the mass profile with the X-ray data and then fit the theoretical convergence map derived from Verlinde's emergent gravity (VEG) with the observed data from gravitational lensing events. For comparison with dark matter, we also consider the Navarro, Frenk, White (NFW) profile. The results indicate that the NFW model can account for the sample well, but only a few clusters can be well reproduced by VEG.
