Abstract (from CDS):

The "Nearby Supernova Factory" collaboration (G. Aldering, S. Bailey, S. Bongard, D. Kocevski, B. C. Lee, S. Loken, P. Nugent, S. Perlmutter, R. Scalzo, R. C. Thomas, L. Wang, and B. A. Weaver, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley; N. Blanc, Y. Copin, E. Gangler, and G. Smadja, Institut de Physique Nucleaire de Lyon; P. Antilogus, S. Gilles, R. Pain, and R. Pereira, Laboratoire de Physique Nucleaire et de Haute Energies de Paris; E. Pecontal and G. Rigaudier, Centre de Recherche Astronomique de Lyon; R. Kessler, Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, Chicago; C. Baltay, D. Rabinowitz, and A. Bauer, Yale University) reports that a spectrum (range 320-1000 nm) of SN 2006D in MCG -01-33-34 (IAUC 8658), obtained Jan. 14.6 UT with the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope (+ Supernova Integral Field Spectrograph = SNIFS), reveals that it is a type-Ia supernova about one week prior to maximum. Most striking is the clear signature of C II 657.8-nm. Concomitant features from C II 426.7-, 472.0-, and 723.3-nm are also present. Once the spectrum is corrected for the host redshift (z = 0.008526, Davoust and Contini 2004, A.Ap. 416, 515, via NED), Doppler shifts of the absorption minima of these lines are measured to be around 12000 km/s. Continued observations, including spectropolarimetry, are strongly encouraged of this bright event to follow the evolution of the carbon signature.
