A new color image of the Crab nebula.

WAINSCOAT R.J. and KORMENDY J.

Abstract (from CDS):

begin{tex}A new color image of the Crab Nebula is presented. This is a 2782 ×1904 pixel mosaic of CCD frames taken through B (blue), V (green), and R (red) filters; it was carefully color balanced so that the Sun would appear white. The resolution of the final image is approximately 0\farcs8 FWHM. The technique by which this image was constructed is described, and some aspects of the structure of the Crab Nebula revealed by the image are discussed. We also discuss the weaknesses of this technique for producing ``true-color'' images, and describe how our image would differ from what the human eye might see in a very large wide-field telescope. The structure of the inner part of the synchrotron nebula is compared with recent high-resolution images from the Hubble Space Telescope and from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope.
