Rotational evolution of magnetic T Tauri stars with accretion discs. II. Approach to the main sequence.

CAMERON A.C., CAMPBELL C.G. and QUAINTRELL H.

Abstract (from CDS):

We have extended our earlier study of the exchange of angular momentum between a solar-mass protostar and a protostellar accretion disc during Hayashi track evolution, to include the Henyey-track evolution towards the zero-age main sequence. We find that the final stellar rotation rate on the zero-age main sequence is a strong function of the mass of the protostellar accretion disc at low disc masses, but nearly independent of disc mass for more massive discs. The distribution of rotation rates that results from a distribution of disc masses has the form of a low-velocity peak and an extended high-velocity tail. The form of the distribution is thus qualitatively similar to the observed rotation distributions of solar-type stars in the α Persei and Pleiades clusters.
