Notes (1) :

HDE 271253: Cannon's 1900 position is 05:25.6 -65:50. When precessed forward to J2000, it becomes 05:25:50 -65:45.0, which is not dissimilar to a star already classified at Harvard, HD 36316 (K3/K4 III, V=7.94, B-V 1.45), at 05:25:53.62 -65:44:31.9. There are no other candidates in the immediate vicinity, so I had long concluded that HD 36316 and HD 271253 are one and the same; the only such instance of a repetition in the LMC region. In view of the roughness of the HDE spectral types, the discrepancy between the HD type (K2) and the HDE (M0) may be not be as bad as it would seem? The magnitude given by the HDE (10.9) vers. HD (9.2) may be harder to explain. If HDE 271253 were to lie close to the edge of the plate used for positional measurement, a simple misidentification or failure to recognize the already classified HD star may be the explanation while (in my experience) the apparent brightness of a star near the edge of the plate can be badly skewed by up to 2 or 3 mags. Examples are YY Car and RV Aps. In summary, my understanding is that they are two separate objects, but for at least one of them the data is skewed or faulty.
Note added in July 2008 from Brian Skiff: another possibility could be a typo in the degrees of declination in the HD number, which would then identify HDE 271253 with HD 271241.
