Supernova 2009ik in NGC 4653.

MONARD L.A.G.

Abstract (from CDS):

L. A. G. Monard, Pretoria, South Africa, reports his discovery of an apparent supernova (magnitude 15.3) on an unfiltered CCD image taken on Aug. 22.703 UT, when the object was low in the western sky. The new object, which was confirmed at the somewhat-brighter magnitude of 14.9 on Aug. 23.699, is located at R.A. = 12:43:51.21, Decl. = -0:34:54.4 (equinox 2000.0), which is 2" east and 75" south of the core of the galaxy NGC 4653. Nothing is seen at this position in Digitized Sky Survey images (limiting red mag 20.5) or on Monard's previous image of this galaxy taken at his Bronberg Observatory on Aug. 10.709 (limiting mag 18.2).
