Supernovae 2009el and 2009em.

FOLATELLI G. and MORRELL N.

Abstract (from CDS):

G. Folatelli and N. Morrell, on behalf of the Millennium Center for Supernova Science and the Carnegie Supernova Project collaboration, report that they obtained spectroscopic observations (range 397-1013 nm) of 2009el (cf. CBET 1797) and 2009em (cf. CBETs 1798, 1806) on May 14.1 and 14.4 UT, respectively, with the 6.5-m Magellan I Baade telescope (+ IMACS) at Las Campanas Observatory. Inspection of the data reveals that 2009el is a young type-II supernova showing a blue (although obviously reddened) continuum with superimposed P-Cyg features of Balmer lines. Adopting for ESO 269-74 the NED recession velocity of 3109 km/s (H I Parkes All-Sky Survey Final Catalogue, 2006) the minimum of the H-beta absorption is blueshifted by roughly 9800 km/s. Na I interstellar absorption with an equivalent width of 0.23-nm is observed at the host-galaxy redshift.

SN 2009em is a type-Ic supernova several weeks past maximum light. Assuming for the host galaxy the NED redshift of 1652 km/s (H I Parkes All-Sky Survey Final Catalogue, 2006), the 'Supernova Identification' tool (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) provides matches with several normal type-Ic events between one and two months from maximum brightness.
