Optical/near-infrared spectroscopy of 10 late-type dwarfs: comparison with models.

DAWSON P.C. and DE ROBERTIS M.M.

Abstract (from CDS):

Spectra of 10 late-type dwarfs are compared with synthetic spectra derived from the NextGen models of Hauschildt, Allard, & Baron. Effective temperatures and metallicities are thereby estimated, generally under the assumption that logg=5.0. The stars are also classified according to their CaH and TiO band strength indices, following the prescription of Gizis. Three of the 10 prove to be extreme subdwarfs, three are subdwarfs, and the remaining four are apparently members of the old disk population, two of them being close binaries. Metallicities span the range -2.5≤[M/H]≤0.0, with rather good consistency between the spectral classification and the derived abundances and temperatures. Although the NextGen models incorporate scaled solar abundances, they can be used with confidence to extract the parameters of low-mass stars.
