Discovery of a very large magnetic field in the Ap star HD 47103.

BABEL J., NORTH P. and QUELOZ D.

Abstract (from CDS):

In the course of a systematic survey of surface magnetic fields of cool Ap stars with correlation procedures, we have discovered a 17.5kG field in the 9th magnitude Ap SrEu star HD 47103. This star has a small projected rotational velocity vsini=4.4km/s only and the Zeeman pattern is resolved for many lines and in particular in the correlation peaks. Its effective temperature, estimated from the profile of the Balmer lines, is 8900±300K. It has one of the largest field known among all Sr-type Ap stars. Most of the previously detected stars, with fields larger or similar to HD 47103, are hotter than this object. The field was estimated by a new technique which requires moderate signal-to-noise. This method is reliable in that it gives very good agreement with the method of Mathys (1990).
