Cold dust in elliptical galaxies.

WIKLIND T. and HENKEL C.

Abstract (from CDS):

We have observed the λ1250 {micro}m flux in 8 elliptical galaxies using the MPIfR 7-channel bolometer system attachet to the IRAM 30-m telescope. Five of the galaxies are detected at more than 3σ, two are tentatively detected and for one we obtained an upper limit. For two of the detected galaxies, the CO(2-1) line makes a significant contribution to the measured λ1250 {micro}m flux. A comparison of the λ1250 {micro}m fluxes, corrected for the CO(2-1) line contribution, with IRAS 60 and 100{micro}m data shows that there is a colt dust component (Td~<20K) in two of the ellipticals. The other galaxies have λ1250 {micro}m fluxes consistent with a one-temperature component, with Td typically between 20-30K.
