ROSAT observation of GX 1+4.

PREDEHL P., FRIEDRICH S. and STAUBERT R.

Abstract (from CDS):

The X-ray binary GX 1+4 has been observed with ROSAT three days after a high state which lasted about three weeks. An accurate position R.A.(2000)=17h32m2.1s, Dec.(2000)=-24deg44'44" has been derived. This confirms the optical identification with the symbiotic star V2116 Oph. Although the intensity of the source was not sufficient to establish a reliable spectrum, the pulse heigt spectrum is consistent with highly absorbed source (NH=5.5x1022cm–2, as measured with GINGA). Assuming a thermal spectrum with kT=50keV we derived a luminosity within 0.1-2.4keV: Fx=1.4x1035erg/s/cm2. GX 1+4 is surrounded by a faint, diffuse emission. We discuss possible implications for the distance of the source if this halo is interpreted as radiation scattered on interstellar dust grains.
