ROSAT X-ray observations of the supernova remnant HB 9.

LEAHY D.A. and ASCHENBACH B.

Abstract (from CDS):

HB 9 was observed by the position sensitive proportional counter (PSPC) detector at the focal plane of the X-ray telescope (XRT) of the Roentgen Satellit (ROSAT). The data consist of scanning observations taken during the survey phase of the ROSAT mission. HB 9 is a large evolved supernova remnant of 2deg angular diameter. The ROSAT soft X-ray image of the supernova remnant HB 9 is presented here. It has an angular resolution of 1', and shows that HB 9 is of centrally brightened form, in contrast to the radio image which shows a shell-type supernova remnant with prominent filamentary structure.
Result. of PSPC spectral analysis are also presented. HB 9 shows no strong spatial temperature variations. An interpretation of the X-ray observations is presented in terms of the White & Long (1991ApJ...373..543W) solution for a blast wave propagating in an inhomogeneous interstellar medium.
